Gah, went to bed early last night and completely forgot what day it is… which is something I frequently do since I work from home and it’s summer vacation so the days are, for the most part, meaningless.  Apologies for the late update.  Good news on the potty training front though!  5 days  in a row now with zero (ish) accidents on the floor!  We are overjoyed/hesitant to make any grand predictions about the end of the diaper era in this house.  Probably more reward lego will be purchased (great incentive that stuff is, but we’ll be swimming in it in no time).

Canada geese are big, and occasionally vicious, and often fearless.  They would wander around loose on the zoo grounds and snap at small children that came near them, or alternately went up to kids and tried to rip food out of their hands.  This was last year at the Toronto zoo and some of the geese were taller than the twins.  When they fly overhead at the end of the summer I get this prickly feeling of winter is coming and that obnoxious honking is the herald.  Alternately, I welcome them back in the spring and occasionally have to stop on the road after the chicks all hatch and 12 little birds waddle across the street after mom.  I have yet to be pooed on.

I was all ready to claim potty training DONE, achievement unlocked!  (which means a trip to Timmy’s for a donut, or Owen REALLY wants this baby seal beanie baby toy) but of course, one of them lets me down.  Last night Owen said he was a big boy and didn’t want to wear a diaper so I let him stay in undies all night and he did not wet the bed.  So proud :)  Evan pooped his underwear so bad the day before I gave up and threw them out… at a birthday party no less.  Then he had another overnight nose bleed so despite Owen making it through the night totally dry, I STILL had to strip the bed and wash everything (including the dozen or so blankies all over).  They are such opposites sometimes it’s hilarious/depressing.

I really haven’t been sleeping well lately, and by lately I mean like the whole last month plus.  I wake up before the kids all the time now, sometimes an hour or more.  I roll over and the clock starts with a 5 and I used to get irrationally upset, but now I’m resigned.  Sometimes I’d go for an early run, now I just try to enjoy an hour of peace to myself (no one trying to “share” my breakfast!) but I’m toast by like 9:30 pm.  I feel like I’m too young to be in bed by 10 every night (not to mention post bedtime is usually my most productive time of the day!).  I have no idea what’s caused this apparent shift in my circadian rhythm?  The hot summer?  Overwork?  Pre-pre menopause??  Let’s add a couple more ‘pres’ on there…. I might just have to start adopting Jim’s usual schedule of a morning nap, followed by an afternoon nap (and yet he has “NO TIME” to help with the yard work… riiiiigghhht.)

At least Death’s having a good day… so far…

I love how pandas CAN eat meat, but are too lazy to go to the effort of hunting something (will probably pick at carcass something else killed/died of old age/etc.)  They WILL mate, but ridiculously rarely and the female’s cycles are really short.  It’s likely they’d just laze themselves to death without human intervention, but because they’re so damn cute people bend over backward for them.  I’ve no clue what the average zoo or panda refuge pays to operate each day (the keepers at the Toronto zoo said they had bamboo flown in from the southern US every month for instance).  Meanwhile, the West African Black rhino was declared extinct in 2011, and other subspecies aren’t doing so well.  Sucks for you rhino, I guess you have to be cuter.  Or not have a magic horn that’s used for male enhancement powder or whatever.  People suck.

The pages get really colourful when they’re all standing around.

So the first week of school went well!  ish.  It was only three days so we’ll see how they fare after a whole week.  There’s 4 kindergarten classes at the twin’s school!  And we live in a small town with another elementary school.  Unfortunately, they’re in the smallest/oldest class and not one of the newly renovated classes on the other side, so they don’t have their own bathroom.  They have to go across the hall and share, which probably led to Owen peeing himself on day 2.  And Evan has lost his hat already, and neither of them can seem to remember their teacher’s names… but I’m sure things will get better.  And then they’ll get too comfortable and we’ll start getting notes home about stubborn, whiny behaviour like we did with Sam.  At least it’s really quiet during the day!  I even got Jim to go on a “run” with me on Friday :)  He made it about half a km.

Vote Incentive: considering all the stories about people texting and walking into traffic/poles/doors, I think that behaviour would be right in Oblivious Ninja’s skill set :)

Death’s dilemma: being helpful and wanted is always a nice feeling… but maybe not when your usefulness involves a “skill” you perhaps don’t relish.  And Crack is going to go hoarse at this rate.

The twins have barely done two weeks of school now and they’ve already brought home the first plague.  They just got runny noses but Jim and I both got full blown sinus pain head colds.  Up all night sneezing two nights in a row :(  What is flu season going to be like this year I wonder… in the meantime, this golden time of no kids at home all day I’ve been looking forward to for so long has turned out to not be nearly as productive as I’d hoped.  We were planning on moving next July but it turns out we can’t push back the closing date as much as we’d like so now I’m spending all my time during the day trying to get this place cleaned out and open house ready.  Urg.

ARGGH!  The work of prepping and staging a house for sale!!!  I hate it.  You super clean everything to the best of your ability (putting your work schedule a little behind in the process) and you know you just have to try to maintain that (good luck with kids!) for the next 3 or so months that they say it usually takes to sell a house.  At least the kids are in school all day and we’re home so if we get notice of a showing it won’t be too hard to quickly/superficially tidy everything.  But I hate this, way more than packing and actually moving :(  Then Evan whacked Owen in the face today causing a nose bleed and my immediate concern is to get him off the carpet because I JUST CAN’T WITH MORE STAINS.  lol, this sucks.

The owl is somewhat inspired by ‘The Secret of Nimh’ which rather freaked me out when I was little (can’t remember how old I was when I first saw that).  It was definitely not your typical Disney movie like I was used to at the time, so I guess I wasn’t prepared for how dark and creepy it got.  Same with ‘Nausicaa’, no goofy musical numbers in that one either!

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians!  And go early vote!  I took the twins with me and they were very confused for a bit as they thought we were going to ‘BOAT’.  Then I had to try and explain the concept of democracy… Evan pranced loudly around the church hall set up as our polling station, and Owen kept lifting up his shirt at one of the old lady organizers.  Good times had by all.

Got Sam the Lego Wall E for his birthday; the thing is adorable and I’m kind of jealous.  I want it for my desk but he’s all “I want to play with it in my room!”.  Fine, whatever.  Maybe I’ll get the Ghostbusters car for me :)  I think he’s probably still a bit young for video games (other than on the iPad) but he’s now asking to watch You Tube videos of other people playing Lego: Dimensions.  I guess maybe by next Christmas… that makes next year’s shopping easy.  Lego should probably just start printing money; the game looks like a blast and all the add on extra characters you can buy are awesome (plus once you’ve bought the character you get to put their vehicle together 3 different ways and play with them for real, it’s not just a nice looking figurine like the Disney and Skylanders games).

I kind of miss simple Tetris…

Hope everyone had an awesome Halloween!  We’re still working on the whole manners thing with the twins.  I think they remembered half the time to say thank you, if they weren’t half way down the steps already and yelling it over their shoulder.  Owen did manage an indignant “Where’s MY candy??” when he thought he was going to get forgotten.  Last year it was hard to get them to focus on anything but people’s various decorations so I guess that’s a bit of an improvement?  I definitely want them to speak up for themselves and stand out… is it too much to ask that they also do so politely?  Baby steps.

PAGE 500!!  It both seems like a lot, and not very much at the same time.  Back before kids, when I was doing 2-3 updates per week, I would have hit this milestone a loooong time ago.  Now I’m so time crunched all the time I’m amazed at that number.  It’s about half way to my original goal (I kind of figured 10 initial characters, 10 books at 100 pages each maybe).  Let’s hope it doesn’t take me another 6 years to get the next 500 pages done :(  I have other series ideas I’d like to work on, I have lists of tee designs I want to do, still gotta pack for the move, and the boys all need haircuts, they look like shaggy unkept beasts.  I think I should go lie down…

Woo!  Page 501!  Less exciting…and I’ve had a raging head ache all since waiting too long to eat lunch and the three loud little monsters in my house aren’t helping.  Turns out I have low blood sugar and never knew until I took a blood test while early on in my first pregnancy.  The doctor’s like “Do you ever feel nauseous if you skip a meal?”  Me: “Yes!”  Doc: “Don’t do that anymore, and you need iron supplements.”  I’m usually pretty careful about having at least a small snack every 3-4 hours but sometimes you get busy and don’t notice 5 hours go by.  Pills never help with these and I usually still have them in the morning… going to bed cranky now… anyway, 501!  Woo!

The twins love owls; it was a sad day indeed when the owl nightlight broke.  We have owl statues, owl sweaters, and owl posters on the wall (and stuffed owls too of course).  I need to design some more owl tees for them though… They also love dinosaurs and looked at me funny when I tried to explain the connection between them.  Perhaps that’s a slightly too complicated concept at the moment (I don’t need my 4 year olds rolling their eyes and telling me to stop making up stories, I mean more than they already do!)

The one in which everyone partakes of questionable substances…

We’re moving on Friday!  I still have lots of stuff to do/call/clean/pack/organize.  I’m finding Lego everywhere.  Speaking of, my kids love Lego.  My friend’s kids love Lego.  The kids at the dojo like to tell me about what Lego sets they have…that company is everywhere (the Dimensions game looks really fun, there’s next Christmas for the boys, provided they’ve figured out the whole SHARING thing) and it’s amazing to think about how it all started.  There’s a couple of interesting docs about Lego, especially the one that talks about how they almost went bankrupt (and that the original factory burned down like 3 times).  Normally I might find the ubiquitous of one company to be a bit jarring, but they’re really good.  Sam got the Wall E set for his birthday (it’s adorable) and the neck is a bit wobbly.  It’s not a big deal and he doesn’t care but I guess they got enough feedback that they’re sending everyone who purchased the set (a lot I imagine, it sold out a couple of times) 10 pieces and a new design for the neck joint.  Good job Lego, excellent customer support!  That may be extra buoyed in my head by our recent experience arguing with Rogers about transferring our overpriced internet account :(
